Bringing clean water to Quới Thiện island commune

The context

Helping vulnerable households secure freshwater during the dry season.

Quới Thiện experiences seasonal drought and saltwater intrusion. Households far from piped water systems may have to buy or transport water for daily use, adding costs for low-income families and older residents.

The project brings rainwater collection, storage, and treatment to households. Water is collected when conditions allow, stored on site, and treated before domestic use. Each system is fitted to the household's circumstances so it can be operated and maintained at home.

Alongside the infrastructure, recipient households are shown how to use, clean, and maintain their systems. Sharing water and practical experience with neighbours extends the project's benefits beyond the six direct installation sites.

Gravity-fed and easy to use at home.

A household solution

Gravity-fed and easy to use at home.

Rainwater is collected from roofs, stored at the household, and passed through a treatment unit before use. The system uses height differences to move water by gravity, without a pump during daily operation. This reduces electricity needs and makes operation and maintenance more suitable for households.

Each household is surveyed before installation so that the tank, pipes, and treatment unit can be positioned to suit its available space. After handover, residents receive hands-on guidance in operation, cleaning, and basic maintenance so they can keep the system running themselves.

How it works

From household surveys to operating guidance.

Survey and select households — Prioritise households facing hardship and significant water shortages that have limited access to piped water.
