The context
A more reliable water source for households beyond the piped network.
Long Hòa covers a large area with dispersed communities, including many places far from central water-supply stations. Some households still depend on rainwater, river water, or wells for daily use, especially when freshwater supplies are unreliable.
Phase 3 of the Clean Water Support project installed 10 rainwater collection, storage, and treatment systems for disadvantaged households in Long Hòa. Bringing treatment directly to households provides another source of treated water and reduces reliance on water of variable quality.
Each system has a tank holding at least 5,000 litres. Water passes through filtration and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection before use. Gravity-fed delivery keeps the system simple to operate in a household setting.

System design
Household storage, layered filtration, and UV disinfection.
Each system has a tank holding at least 5,000 litres. Water passes through sand, other filter media, and a polypropylene (PP) cartridge with a 0.2 µm filtration rating before UV disinfection. Gravity feeds the water, so no pump is needed for daily use.
Without a pump, there is less equipment to operate and maintain. After installation, residents are shown how to use the system, clean the filters, and carry out basic maintenance so they can care for it at home.
Benefits for households
Greater control over water for daily use.
More resilient in the dry season — On-site storage reduces reliance on transporting or buying water when freshwater is scarce.
