Adapting crop production to increasing salinity in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta: Thoughts on stakeholders and roles in a potential transition process
Deolu-Ajayi, A. O.; Tran, B. T. N.
Summary
This report discusses the roles stakeholders could play in a transition towards saline agriculture in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, where saltwater intrusion, aggravated by climate change, causes crop losses and socio-economic costs every year. Current strategies include salt-tolerant cultivars, water management and soil amendments. The report sets out the distinct roles of government, research institutions, development partners, the private sector, NGOs and farmers in adopting and scaling up these strategies. The main challenges it identifies are socio-economic and environmental risks, unclear national policies, and the need for stakeholder awareness, practical tools, farmer capacity building, market development and coordination across the value chain.
