Green Innovation Bulletin: Luffa and the journey to rebuild livelihoods in the Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta faces interconnected challenges from climate change, vulnerable agricultural livelihoods, and nutritional deficits—with 60% of Vietnamese consuming less green vegetables than recommended by WHO. Harnessing the untapped potential of luffa, a familiar crop traditionally sold fresh at low value, the EVERGREEN - GROW LUFFA, GROW LIVELIHOODS project was born to redefine the crop's true worth.

Green Innovation Bulletin: Luffa and the journey to rebuild livelihoods in the Mekong Delta

Comprehensive Solutions: From Mobile Luffa Gardens to a Circular Value Chain

To transform luffa into a tool for climate adaptation and economic empowerment, the team implemented integrated innovative models:

- Mobile Luffa Garden: A semi-hydroponic design built from recycled materials, tailored for schools and small spaces. Deployed at Tra Vinh University (TVU) and Luong Hoa A Secondary & High School, it serves as a hands-on lab for students to practice STEM, nutrition, and sustainable farming.

100% Circular Value Chain:

o   Young luffa and leaves are crafted into nutrition-rich foods

o   Mature luffa fiber is turned into household and handicraft items

o  Remaining plant waste is converted into organic compost.

Six-Month Milestones and Lessons Learned

The journey from concept to reality delivered both promising impact and valuable lessons:

- Key Milestones: Developed 8 distinct products, expanded to 2 schools, created experiential learning opportunities for over 1,000 students, and engaged more than 40 youths via the Luffa Future 2026 video contest.

- Learning from Failure: The team overcame multiple prototyping setbacks—from food items that were too dense or hard to preserve to redesigning products for better taste, durability, and packaging. Each failure deepened the team's understanding of materials, consumers, and community needs.

Ready for the Future

EVERGREEN aims to expand the Mobile Luffa Garden beyond school grounds to local farming households across the Mekong Delta. Partnering directly with local communities, the project strives to turn humble luffa into a pillar of green livelihoods and a sustainable future for the region.
