1. Practical Impact from Quới Thiện Island Commune – A Foundation for a Larger Journey

The clean water support project in Quới Thiện Island Commune is a clear testament to the effective combination of the scientific and technological expertise of STARS Water Center (Tra Vinh University) and HEINEKEN Vietnam’s commitment to sustainable development.

Faced with the unique challenges of an island commune, which is directly affected by natural conditions and the serious risk of domestic water shortages during the dry season, the project successfully implemented community-scale rainwater harvesting, storage, and treatment solutions. During the working session on August 11, 2026, both parties conducted a comprehensive analysis and assessment of the results achieved, drawing valuable lessons from the project’s implementation, including its advantages, challenges, and the model’s adaptability to the actual needs of the local community.

2. Strategic Vision 2027–2032: Expanding Community Clean Water Solutions Nationwide

Building on this strong practical foundation, STARS Water Center and HEINEKEN Vietnam devoted the working session to discussing and aligning on strategic directions for the 2027–2032 period, with the ambition to expand their impact across communities throughout Vietnam.

• Transitioning from individual projects to a nationwide scalable model: Rather than focusing solely on supporting individual communities or small-scale sites, the strategic objective is to standardize water treatment models that meet appropriate technical standards, making them easier to replicate, transfer, and deploy at scale. This approach will enable the partners to reach more communities and improve access to clean water, particularly in island communes, remote and underserved areas, and border regions across Vietnam that face significant risks of domestic water shortages.
• Flexible adaptation and sustainable development: The partnership will focus on researching, designing, and developing water treatment and water reuse systems tailored to the specific ecological conditions of different regions in Vietnam—from saline-affected areas in the Mekong Delta and coastal and island communities to mountainous areas facing water scarcity. Solutions will prioritize strengthening community resilience to the growing impacts of climate change, drought, and saltwater intrusion.
• Optimizing technology and empowering communities: The partners aim to promote modern, environmentally friendly water treatment technologies that are easy to operate and require low maintenance costs. Alongside system installation, emphasis will be placed on training, communication, and capacity building to ensure that local communities have the knowledge and skills to independently manage, operate, and maintain the systems effectively over the long term.

Through this collaborative approach, the partnership aims to contribute to the provision of stable and safe domestic water supplies, improve quality of life, protect public health, and create lasting positive impacts for millions of people across communities throughout Vietnam.
